“Are you sure?” he asked.

“Positive. Should we walk across the street?”

“To the park?” Lily asked.

“Yes.”

“Sure.” Ramsey shrugged. “It’s a decent day out, may as well enjoy it.”

It was a cool fall day. It wouldn’t be long before the first snow blanketed the area. I remembered when I was a kid, I hated being cooped up in the house all day. But I also hated being wet and cold. I learned to take advantage of every minute outside that I could. Being outside was a million times better than being stuck inside with my parents.

“I’m going to swing,” Lily declared and ran ahead.

“Does she know this park?” I asked.

“Her school is right around the corner,” Ramsey answered. “Her old nanny brought her here on occasion. In fact, she’s been to the diner quite a few times as well.”

“How crazy I never noticed her before,” I said.

“She’s quiet until she feels safe,” Ramsey said quietly. “She doesn’t really come out of her shell until she feels comfortable. I think she feels comfortable with you. I don’t think she’s ever talked that much to a virtual stranger.”

I smiled, feeling like I made a little difference in her life. “She’s a really good kid. Smart, too.”

“Told you,” he said with a laugh. “So, I would like to offer you the job. I know Lily is good with you. She doesn’t have to say it; I can see it.”

My heart was slamming against my chest. I got the job! It felt like I grabbed hold of an energy bolt. I wanted to bounce around and dance and shout at the moon. “I would love the job,” I said. “I really like your daughter. I can’t wait to hang out with her.”

“I know you have a job, but how soon can you start?” he asked.

“I’ll go back and see what shifts I can cover,” I said. “I could probably start in a few days.”

“That would be amazing.” He looked relieved. “Can you come out to our house in the next day or two? We’ll need to fill out some paperwork and I’ll show you the house and the car. I’ll put your name down with the school for pickups as well. I know it’s a lot and it’s fast, but I’m desperate.”

“I can come by tomorrow after work,” I said. “I get off at two.”

“Why don’t I pick you up from work and we’ll go over to the school,” he suggested. “I’ll show you how the pickup line works and introduce you to a few of the teachers.”

“Okay,” I blurted out.

We went over a few more details before Ramsey and Lily left. I practically ran back to the diner to tell Colleen the news.

“Bedtime,” I said to Lily, who was doing her best to be invisible in the chair in the corner.

“Five more minutes,” she said without taking her eyes from the book she was reading.

“You said that fifteen minutes ago,” I reminded her. “Come on, we’ve got a big day tomorrow.”

“Not really,” she murmured. “It’s the same day.”

We walked upstairs together. “Aren’t you excited to hang out with Dee tomorrow?”

“I don’t know.” She shrugged. “I don’t care.”

“Hey.” I stopped walking and looked at her. “What do you mean you don’t care?”
