“I’ll see you tonight,” he said and gave me a last lingering look.

“Thanks for letting me crash last night,” I said.

“Of course.”

“Have a good day at work.” I smiled and then quickly went to the garage.

Lily was standing with the back door open. “What’s wrong?” I asked.

“There’s mud,” she said.

I opened the driver’s door and laughed. “Yeah, I see that. Hold on, I’ll grab a towel.”

I went back into the house and found Ramsey loading his briefcase. “Forget something?” he asked.

“Yes, my mud pit,” I said with a grimace. “I need to wipe the seats down.”

“I’ll help,” he offered.

“It’s fine,” I told him. “I’ll get it.”

As I walked back to the car, Ramsey followed me. I could feel his eyes on me, and I turned to face him. He stepped closer, and I could smell his aftershave. My heartrate quickened as his hand brushed against my arm.

“Are you sure you don’t want me to help you?” he asked, his voice low and husky.

I hesitated for a moment before nodding. “Okay.”

He followed me to the car, and I handed him a towel. We worked in silence, wiping down the seats and cleaning the mud off the floor mats. Ramsey was so close to me that I could feel his body heat radiating off him. My mind wandered to the night before, and the way his hands had felt on my skin. I couldn’t deny the attraction that I felt toward him, even if it was wrong.

“We better get moving,” I said, breaking the moment.

I backed out of the garage with Ramsey’s eyes watching us as we left. I had to get over last night. It was a moment of weakness. It wasn’t going to happen again. It couldn’t. I loved my job as Lily’s nanny. I wasn’t going to let lust ruin it.

I pulled into the line at Lily’s school. “Tuck and roll,” I teased.

“What?” Lily asked with confusion.

“Nothing.” I laughed. “I’ll see you after school. Have a good day.”

“Bye, Dee,” she said and hopped out of the backseat.

The drop-off line didn’t leave a lot of time for any long goodbyes. I drove away and went straight to a carwash.

ChapterFifteen

Ramsey

Iliked our new routine. I liked that Dee felt like she had been a part of our family for years rather than weeks. Dee had brought a couple of changes of clothes over to leave in the guestroom for those days when I worked late or when I needed to go to work early. It made it easier on everyone if Dee could roll out of bed and get moving instead of waiting for her to show up. She got to sleep in an extra hour and I got the comfort of knowing she was under my roof.

I wasn’t going to lie, having her in the house, in a bed just down the hall from me, was difficult. Difficult and good. Since the kiss, it was pretty much all I thought about. So far, neither of us mentioned the kiss. The first couple of days following the kiss had been a little awkward. We managed to pretend our way through the awkwardness and things felt like they were returning to normal.

We talked and occasionally touched if we were handing off a stack of laundry or she was giving me a bag of groceries. Every time we touched it was the equivalent of being hit by lightning. I couldn’t deny my attraction to her. I told myself I couldn’t have her. She was off limits, but damn, my body craved her. I longed for her touch. I wanted to feel her body under mine. I wanted to feel her lithe little body over mine. I wanted her every which way.

The days were getting colder and the holidays were coming up fast. I was looking forward to celebrating this year. I did every year, but I was really hoping to incorporate Dee into our family celebrations. I knew it would make Lily happy. Maybe she could even stay the night Christmas Eve. Lily would be very excited to wake up with her on Christmas morning. Of course, I was getting a little ahead of myself. Dee didn’t talk much about her family, but I got the impression they weren’t close. I wanted to make her a part of our little family.

But I was probably moving a little fast. She was the nanny. She was paid to make Lily happy. I was reading into something that wasn’t there. I was basing all my feelings on a kiss. Technically, it had been more like twenty kisses rolled into one, but it was still a kiss.

That morning, I was working from home. I had some reports to review and sometimes it was easier to work from my quiet office and not be disturbed. Dee took Lily to school and then was running errands. I had the house to myself. I settled into my cozy home office, surrounded by the comforting hum of my computer and the scent of freshly brewed coffee.
