“Ramsey, there is nothing physically wrong with her,” Izzy said gently. “She needs you to be there with Dee. She was very upset that she had to leave. We assured her you were there taking care of Dee. She needs you there.”

“Okay,” I said. “I’ll see you guys in the morning.”

“We’ve already called in sick.” She laughed. “I think Lily deserves a sick day for this.”

“Shit, I didn’t call the school,” I said.

“I already did,” Izzy said. “I told them she would be back on Monday. She needs time to recuperate.”

“Thank you,” I said with relief. “I appreciate it.”

“Of course,” she said. “Tell Dee I hope she feels better.”

“I will,” I assured her.

I got a tea, soda, and a couple of sandwiches before going back to her room. If a nurse thought she was going to kick me out after visiting hours were over, I would absolutely play the cash card. I would pay for a private room and buy the leniency someone of my wealth could pay for, whether it was fair or not. I wasn’t trying to be fair.

I pulled the chair over to the side of the bed and watched her sleep for a bit. I was in love with the woman. I didn’t think now was the time to tell her, but when she was feeling better, it was definitely going to be a conversation we had very soon.

“Hi,” she murmured.

“Hi. I got your tea.”

I helped her sit up before holding the cup to her lips. She took a few sips before dropping her head back. “I feel as weak as a newborn kitten.” She sighed.

“It’s only been a few hours,” I said. “Give your body some time to heal.”

I put the cup of tea on the table and sat down once again. “I brought you a sandwich, if you’re hungry.”

“Not right now.” She grimaced. “Maybe later.”

“It’s not going anywhere and neither am I,” I told her.

“How’s Lily?”

It made me happy to see her concern for Lily. “She’s getting spoiled. I’m not sure we’re going to want to bring her home after Uncle Cam and Aunt Izzy are done with her. Cam has apparently decided she needed a milkshake for dinner and is incapable of walking.”

Dee tried to laugh before reaching for her stomach. “Ow.”

“I just want you to know before you go back to sleep, I’m so grateful you came into our lives,” I said softly.

She scoffed. “I nearly killed your daughter.”

“It could have happened to anyone. I know how much you care about her. I know you would never do anything to hurt her. That’s the best thing I could ever hope for in a nanny. I don’t care that you don’t have any experience. You have the kind of qualifications that can’t be taught in a fancy school. You care. That’s what matters.”

She smiled. “Thank you.”

I kissed her again. I couldn’t stop kissing her. It was reassuring to feel her warm skin under my lips and know she was very much alive and was going to be okay. “Try to rest,” I said. “I’ll be right here.”

“You’re going to stay, for real?”

“You couldn’t drag me away,” I said.

She smiled and closed her eyes. “Okay.”
