“This is true.” I sighed.

As we walked toward the front door, Ramsey’s hand gently rested on the small of my back. Lily walked beside me; her hand held mine. I couldn’t help but feel a renewed sense of optimism. The road to recovery was going to take a few days or weeks, according to the doctor, but it was going to be better with the two of them by my side.

“Do you want to go to bed?” Ramsey asked once we were inside.

I looked at him, pleading with him. “Can I please have a bath?”

“Of course, under one condition,” he said.

“What?”

“I’m carrying you up the stairs,” he said. “At least for now. I know you’re weak. There’s no reason to risk a fall. You don’t need to hurt yourself any more than you already are.”

I looked at the staircase and needed no more convincing. “Okay.”

“We got you bubble bath,” Lily said as she followed behind Ramsey carrying me up the stairs. “Colleen said you liked bubble baths.”

“Did she now?” I laughed. “I think Colleen might have said a lot of things.”

“She said just enough,” Ramsey said quietly.

I could only imagine what my very forward, loud-mouthed friend said to him. When I talked to her on the phone, she was not happy. She blamed him for pissing me off and distracting me. I assured her it was all my fault and Mother Nature played a role. It was not Ramsey’s fault. Not even a little.

I sat on the toilet while Ramsey started the bath. Lily dumped in a bunch of bubble bath. “Lily, can you go get a soda for Dee?” Ramsey asked her.

“Yep.” She nodded and left the bathroom.

“Let me help you,” Ramsey said. “I’m not about to leave you alone to get in the tub.”

“Thank you.”

I was covered with bubbles when Lily knocked on the door. “I have her soda,” she called out.

Ramsey took it and left it on the ledge of the tub. “I’ll be back in thirty minutes to check on you,” he said. “Relax.”

“Thank you,” I said again.

I closed my eyes and let the feel of the hot water caress my aching muscles. I couldn’t believe the number of bruises I had covering my body. It felt good to soak with the scent of the mint and lavender filling the room. I must have dozed off because the next thing I knew, Ramsey was kneeling beside me.

“I’ll wash your hair,” he said quietly.

“Where’s Lily?”

“She’s sitting on the couch with her cheeseburger and watching a movie,” he said.

“Is she really all right?” I asked. “I feel so bad for her.”

“You know, I think she’s okay,” he said. “You being here helps. She needed to see you were okay. She wants to take care of you.”

“I’ll do my best to be a good patient,” I said.

“Good,” he said as he carefully poured water over my hair.

He gently washed my hair, massaging my scalp before rinsing away the shampoo and conditioner. “You’re good at that,” I said.

“I’ve had some practice washing girl hair,” he joked.

He helped me out of the tub and put me on the toilet while he dried me off. He dressed me in pajamas that were not mine. “Where did you get these?” I asked him.
