“Me too.” I grinned.

I watched him carefully lift Lily into his arms and carry her out of the room. The guy was going to have arms and buns of steel if he kept carting people up and down stairs. Not that it would bother me a bit.

ChapterTwenty-Seven

Ramsey

As the days turned into weeks, our lives continued to intertwine, each passing moment solidifying the bond between us. Dee was still not comfortable driving. I didn’t blame her. We had fresh snowfall and the roads were bad. I was working from home most days. When I had to go to the office, I dropped Lily off and went in for a few hours.

I checked the time and logged off my computer. “Babe?” I called out.

“In here,” she replied.

I followed the sound of her voice. Dee was in the kitchen, loading the dishwasher.

“What are you doing?” I asked. “You’re supposed to be resting.”

“I have been resting for two weeks,” she said. “I’m done resting.”

“You’re supposed to wait for the doctor to tell you you’re done,” I scolded.

She rolled her eyes. “I have very little bruising left. I’m fine. My ass is going to be bruised if I don’t get off that damn couch.”

“It’s time for your doctor’s appointment,” I reminded her.

She sighed. “I have never been to a doctor as often as I have been in the last two weeks.”

“This is your last visit,” I promised. “This is your all-clear to go back to work, which you’ve clearly ignored.”

“I put a few dishes in the dishwasher,” she said. “I’m fine.”

I grabbed her coat and helped her put it on. The shiny new Mercedes sat in the bay next to my car. When Dee was ready, she was going to start driving again. I wasn’t going to push her. I personally thought it was better to get right back on the horse, but that was my opinion.

I helped her into the passenger seat before walking around to get behind the wheel.

As we drove to the doctor’s office, I couldn’t help but steal glances at Dee. Her short, dark hair brushed against the collar of her coat. Her full lips were pursed in concentration as she looked out the window. My mind drifted to the first time I had seen her. Even then, something about her drew me in. I never would have imagined a couple of months later we were going to be visiting a doctor together or essentially living together.

The memory was interrupted as we pulled up to the doctor’s office. Dee reluctantly got out of the car, and I followed her inside. The waiting room was full, and we were directed to take a seat. I took Dee’s hand in mine and squeezed it reassuringly. She smiled at me, and I could see the worry lines on her forehead disappear.

After a few minutes, Dee was called in for her appointment. I waited nervously in the waiting room, my mind racing with thoughts of what the doctor might say. Finally, Dee emerged from the back, a smile on her face.

“Well?” I asked, standing up.

“All clear,” she said, grinning. “I can go back to work tomorrow.”

Relief flooded through me, and I wrapped my arms around her, holding her close. “Considering I’m your boss, I’m placing you on light duty.”

She laughed. “I don’t think it can get any lighter.”

“Why don’t we go pick up Lily from school and then go out to a celebration dinner.”

“It’s not like I was really laid up,” she said.

“But you officially have a clean bill of health,” I said. “Lily is going to be very relieved.” Dee kissed me on the cheek, and we walked out of the doctor’s office hand in hand. As we got into the car and drove to pick up Lily, I couldn’t keep my eyes off Dee. Her body was so close to mine, and I could feel the heat radiating from her. It had taken all my self-control not to touch her these last two weeks. I needed her to heal. I knew how we were when we were together. I couldn’t risk causing her serious injury with an over-excited sexathon.

When we arrived at the school, Lily came running out, a huge smile on her face. She hopped in the backseat. “Are you better?” she asked.

“I am,” Dee answered. “I’m all good.”
