Brenna smiles at him and his grin gets a little wider. He taps the countertop. “Haven’t seen you two around here before.”

“It’s our first time.” I point at Brenna. “She wanted to see if there were any guys worth checking out here.”

He tosses his head. “My shift’s almost over.”

Brenna sips her drink. “You’re offering yourself up?”

“Who knows? I could talk you out of wasting your time with a suit.”

“Sounds promising,” Brenna says.

I clear my throat. Bump her in the side.

She jumps and blurts, “Coffee?”

He laughs. “Coffee sounds great. Just let me grab my things.”

The moment he’s gone, Brenna turns to me and whispers, “That was too easy.”

“He’s cute.”

“Isn’t it supposed to be harder than this? I don’t… this is new.”

“Some things are just meant to be.”

“We’ll see.” She narrows her eyes. “He’s still a stranger. Maybe he’s dangerous.”

“So? Drive separately. Don’t take any unopened drinks from him. Send me an SOS text if you need an out. Be cautious but don’t be afraid. What are the odds that you came out tonight and made a connection with someone in less than two seconds?”

“I don’t want to leave you on the lurch.”

“I’m fine.”

“What about you and…?” She glances over my shoulder at where Kastle is sitting with that woman.

The bartender rounds the counter. “Ready?”

“Do you want to come with us, Kae?”

“No. You go. Enjoy yourself.”

Brenna gives me a long look. “You sure? You rode with me.”

“Go.” I push her. “I’ll catch a taxi.”

She blows me a kiss. “I’ll call you tomorrow.”

“Give me all the details.” I wink.

She disappears with Hot Bartender and I sip my drink alone at the bar.

I don’t turn my head in Kastle’s direction. Doesn’t matter what he’s doing. With her. With that woman who’s not me. It’s none of my business. I just hope that she knows how privileged she is to be sitting across from a man like Kastle. I hope she’s not just there because he’s a famous reality TV figure. Because he’s rich. Because he’s handsome.

I hope she appreciates that he’s funny. That dry, self-deprecating humor that shows he doesn’t take himself too seriously. That’s sincere and humble and witty.

I hope she sees how attentive he is. The way he can focus in on you, making you feel like you’re the only woman in the world. Like no other woman would ever compare.

I hope she sees him. All of him. And not just the parts she thinks she knows on TV.
