I can wish the best for him and still be mad.

I can do that.

Someone slips into the seat next to me and, for a moment, my heart jumps thinking it’s Kastle. I glance up and then my brows lower in disappointment when I realize it’s some guy in a suit.

“Expecting someone else?”

“No.” I choke out the word. Drain my drink. “I’m here alone.”

“That’s good for me.” He smiles.

It’s a nice smile. Cute.

It’s not as devastating as Kastle’s. When he grins there’s a small dimple in his left cheek. And his eyebrow quirks just a little. And he looks like someone who’s about to rock your entire world.

But it’s unfair of me to compare Kastle to this guy. To any guy.

They’ll all fall short.

I’ve done this song and dance before. Kept looking for someone who could match Kastle. His kindness. His sweetness. His attentiveness.

“Can I buy you a drink?” the man asks.

I look up and down. Then I peer over at Kastle’s table.

He’s staring this way intently.

A dark and wicked idea sparks in my head. I lean forward, pressing my hand on the stranger’s knuckles. “You know what? I would really like that.”

Twenty-Eight

Kastle

I know what Kaelyn’s doing. When she follows that punk in the suit that his trust fund probably paid for. When she sits in a booth perpendicular to mine. When she places her hand on his and laughs at his jokes that probably aren’t that funny.

I know.

Because I know her.

Because she’s everything to me.

This is a game she wants to play.

A game she’ll win.

Because I can’t stop myself from playing right into her hands. Can’t stop the irritation that sweeps through my chest like a burning flame. Can’t stop glaring in that bastard’s direction for his audacity. How dare he look at her. Touch her. Want her.

Kaelyn’s a pure, flawless diamond. He’s not equipped to handle a woman of her caliber. Of her value. Of her class. And since when did she like men with such boyish faces?

That day, in my office, she slid her fingers down my jaw. She teased me about how sharp it was. She grazed her lips gently against it to test if it would cut her. I kissed her for her outrageousness. When she laughed, I inhaled her giggles, her screams, her sighs, her sweetness.

“Why do you keep looking over there?” Ana points at Kaelyn’s table.

Her voice is like nails on a chalkboard. I wonder why she’s sticking around. What did mom promise her? A feature on our website? A wedding fit for a princess? Her own puppet to tug and pull?

“Do you know them?” Ana arches blonde eyebrows. Already, her voice carries that sharpness of ownership.

I drag my eyes away from Kaelyn and glance at Ana. “You should leave.”
