But I don’t have those insecurities.

Not around him.

Part of it is my own disassociation with who I’ve become. I’m numb inside. Going through the motions. It feels like I woke up one day and I was here, at the top of the food chain, wealth and fame at my fingertips with no action or motivation of my own.

I studied business and took over the company, but my heart’s never been in it.

My heart’s still in the plastic wrap.

Never taken out of the box.

And Heath is, well, he’s Heath.

Genuine. Grounded. Solid.

His heart beats and bleeds.

I copy Heath’s cool stance and lean back in my chair. “I’m processing.”

Heath slams his feet against the ground and leans forward. “You’re kidding. I never thought you’d have the guts.”

I arch an eyebrow at him really?

The phone vibrates again.

This time with a text.

Heath stares at me, his green eyes picking me apart. “You won’t answer?”

“No.”

“You two fighting?”

“Mm-mm.”

“Then?”

“Mom did something.”

His broad shoulders stiffen. “You said no?”

I shake my head.

He curses. “Of course not. You never say no.”

“She wants Kaelyn there.”

“And Kaelyn wants to go?”

“She wants us to fake a relationship.”

“What?”

I nod.
