There’s a hint of expectation in her brown eyes.

I understand all her expressions.

Except that one.

What does she want from me?

Why does it feel like if I make the wrong step, I’ll slap my foot against a landmine?

I step back. Let her excuse slather over the tension that still sizzles between us, over the lips that are still tingling, the bodies that still burn, and the private places that still long for relief.

I nod. “I’ll take you home.”

She walks with me, but she doesn’t take my hand.

We get in the car, but we don’t talk.

I escort her to her front door, but she doesn’t invite me in. She doesn’t suggest we buy pizza and watch Frozen for the thousandth time.

“I’ll see you later,” Kaelyn says quietly, not quite meeting my eyes.

“Good…” The door slams closed in my face. “Night.”

Nothing.

Silence.

I slip a hand into my pocket as my heart thumps painfully.

Kaelyn lied.

We made it weird.

Fifteen

Kaelyn

Morning sunlight falls through the windows in my upper-story office. It highlights the patches in the hardwood floor. Dances over the spines on the giant bookcase. The Malcolm X posters. The miniature African drums on the wall.

There’s no music today.

No dancing.

No celebrating of the oldies that I love.

I’m… in shock.

Still.

Kastle’s kiss rocked my world and now it feels like everything is upside down. Like I’m walking on the ceiling.

My heart won’t stop running like a racehorse out the gate and I wonder if I’m having a heart attack.

The door opens.

I snap up. Rush around the room. Wrap my hands around the woman lugging a pile of boxes through.

Papers go flying.
