I glance back.

There’s nowhere else to go.

“Y-you should be in bed,” I mutter, trying to keep my voice strong and failing spectacularly. “You’re not fully healed yet.”

Hawk’s deep voice rumbles over me, sending goosebumps skittering over my skin. “I heard there was one maid who hadn’t reported to my room this morning.” He steps forward, towering over me. “Imagine how pissed off I was to have been disobeyed.” Another step. “Imagine my annoyance when Linda lied and said that I’d seen all the workers.”

I edge around him, moving to his other side so that I have more space to run away. “Hawk…”

“I came down here, looking for this woman who’d dare to defy me and I heard your voice through the door.”

“I can explain.”

He pivots on his feet, his eyes not leaving mine for a second. “I wasn’t dreaming last night.”

“N-no.”

“You were here all along.” He glances down. Chuckles. “Speedy.”

“Go back to bed.”

“I missed you.”

My heart thunders. I inch back.

His jaw twitches. “You turned me into a fool and I’m so blasted happy to see you that it doesn’t even matter.”

“You should be resting.”

“In bed?”

I nod hesitantly.

“Okay.”

“Hawk… what are you… Hawk!” I shriek as he hauls me up and throws me over his shoulder like a sack of potatoes.

My head bumps against his lower back with every step as he carries me through the servant’s hallway, up the stairs and down another hallway.

The other maids stare at us as he hauls me around. They’ve gotten to know me these past few days and I’m sure they’re all wondering what’s going on.

I press my face into Hawk’s shirt, my cheeks burning from embarrassment. Even when he’s sick, he still manages to be a bastard.

Hawk throws the door open and tosses me on his bed. I bounce unceremoniously, my hair tumbling out of the tight knot and my head bashing into a pile of soft pillows that smell like Hawk’s masculine yet designer cologne.

“You want me to come to bed?” He prowls to the door and locks it. “I need you there with me.”

Unsure of what to say, I part my lips.

I expect him to get in immediately, but Hawk paces instead.

My eyes bounce back and forth, following his trek.

Left.

I’m sorry, Hawk. I’m not your leading lady.

Right.
