I’m just a nobody who let her sister die.

Left.

I can’t stay with you.

Right.

I don’t belong here.

He stops and looks at me. His eyes host a mixture of anger and desperation. His fingers rake through his messy black hair, further mussing the already wild locks.

I’m leaving.

But I’m not going anywhere right now.

Gathering all my strength, I silence the doubts in my head.

I may not be the leading lady of The Heirs of Brighton Academy. And this may not be my story.

But I can pretend that it is.

At least for tonight.

HAWK

“What should I do with you, Speedy?” I stop in front of the window. Run a hand through my hair. “What should I do with you?”

She sits up. “You can start with coming to bed.”

I stop.

Watch her.

There’s something in her expression. In her voice.

When I found her downstairs, she’d been frightened. Like a cornered mouse recognizing she was caught in a trap seconds before the pin crushed her little legs.

Squirming. Frightened. Powerless to stop it.

Now, she sits up. Watches me head on.

Back ramrod straight. Fire in her eyes.

Her hair puffs out around her head, wild and curly.

I smirk at her fierce expression.

So my mouse has become a lion?

My heart thumps from looking at her. She’s sitting regally in my bed. Surrounded by my pillows. Perched on my mattress.

Exactly where she belongs.

“You played me.”

She arches an eyebrow. “I work for you.”
