Tears push at the back of my eyes.

I groan.

Someone knocks on the door. “Shanel? Are you sick, dear?”

I climb to my feet, wash my hands and open the door.

Linda takes one look at me and spins on her heels. “I’ll get some medicine.”

“Thank you,” I croak.

My restlessness multiplying, I limp down the hallway in search of Catherine.

Masculine laughter mixed with the tinkling cadence of feminine chuckles trickles through the air. I head towards the sound and find Hawk and Catherine sitting in the living room sofa.

Hawk’s hair is wet from the shower. He’s wearing a simple Henley and shorts. The way he’s lounging on the sofa is his classic ‘power-pose’—legs wide open, arms outstretched.

Catherine looks feminine and dainty by his side.

They’re close together, their thighs almost touching. Hawk says something that makes Catherine laugh even harder. She pushes his shoulder and wiggles a finger under his nose.

It’s so easy between them. So right.

It doesn’t hurt that they are two of the most beautiful people I’ve ever seen.

Flashes of the movie pour through my head.

Hawk and Catherine at the bridge.

Hawk and Catherine sharing their first kiss.

Hawk and Catherine’s first date.

First night together.

First ‘I love you’s.

It’s all there.

A movie in my head.

And now it’s in front of me.

I can feel their chemistry.

How organic.

How natural.

How… fated.

And my heart breaks.

Unable to breathe, I run out of the room and just keep running.

I need to get out.

Out of this world.
