Linda’s lips twitch. “So she’s agreed to live with you?”

“A conversation we’ll have soon.”

She shakes her head to hide her amusement. Slowly, the concerned look returns and overtakes her expression. “I’ll send someone up there.”

“Wait.” I prowl around the couch and snatch Linda’s wrist. Shaking the pills, I ask, “Is Shanel feeling sick?”

“She was throwing up a few minutes ago.”

The blood drains from my face.

Storming past Linda, I head to Shanel’s old room in the servant’s quarters.

Empty.

I check all seven bathrooms.

Then I instruct the maids to check their rooms as well.

No Shanel.

I call the security at the front and back gates and they assure me that no one has come in or out since Catherine arrived. I instruct them to search the video feeds and alert me as soon as Shanel’s last location is found.

Where the hell have you gone again, Speedy?

The wailing in my head starts.

I collapse against the wall, squeezing my eyes shut and forcing air into my lungs. The strength of my headache obliterates every thought and yet it’s not louder than the frantic need for my woman.

“Hawk!” Catherine appears in front of me.

I straighten, trying my best not to look as weak as I feel. “Have you… found her yet?”

“No.”

“Where the hell could she be?”

“It’s like she disappeared,” Catherine says.

A piercing shriek bludgeons my skull at the word ‘disappeared’.

Panic builds in my chest.

I can’t lose her.

Can’t lose another person I love.

“She has to be around here somewhere,” I snap.

Catherine winces. “I hope this isn’t my fault.”

“What do you mean?”

“She seemed upset when we spoke.”

I grab her shoulders. “Why?”

“Sh-she kept apologizing to me. Kept talking about how sorry she was for taking my place. I…” Catherine shakes her head in confusion. “I don’t know. I thought it was weird, but I didn’t…”
