I sit up, twigs and leaves sticking to my hair.

My phone rings again.

I pick up. “You found her yet?”

“I did,” Catherine’s voice rings through the speakers. “She texted me.”

I scramble up. “Where is she?”

“At school. Should I go or will you?”

“I’ll go alone.” I turn back to stare at the shack. The door is slightly open and the doorway gleams brilliantly silver in the harsh afternoon light.

How did Shanel get out of here without anyone seeing her? Did she use…?

I shake my head to rid myself of that crazy thought. There’s no way that’s possible. It’s just a useless doorway standing in the middle of an empty room.

There has to be another explanation. Speedy’s smart. She must have edged past the guards and slipped out undetected.

I’ll investigate that doorway later.

For now, I need to get to Shanel.

I change quickly. Grab my motorcycle. Head out.

The powerful machine roars beneath me. There’s nothing but open road. The wind in my face. The sun on my head.

In no time, I park, toss my helmet and storm into the school.

Kids crowd the hallway. My eyes scan past all of them, searching for Shanel. A few minutes of looking leads me to her.

She’s standing at her locker, wearing the school uniform—tight, button-down shirt and short plaid skirt. I don’t know when she had time to change, but she looks like a whole damn meal in it.

The crowd parts and I notice that she’s not alone. Miles is standing close to her, an arm pressed on the locker above her head and his body sheltering hers.

I see red.

Striding forward, I clench my fists.

Shanel catches me coming.

She steps in between us. “Hawk.”

“Move.”

“No.” She lifts her chin. “I won’t.”

“I thought I told you to keep your distance,” I growl at Miles.

“You can say whatever you want.” He drops his arms around Shanel who accepts him with a smile. “I don’t have to listen.”

“This is your last warning.”

“Back off, Hawk. You’ve made enough of a fool of yourself.”

I lunge for him.

“Hawk, just stop.” Shanel steps forward, her eyes intent on me. “Don’t you get it? You got played.”
