“I told you. I saw it.”

“It’s like you were there.” He gasps, his eyes darting back and forth. “Like you peered into my memories.”

“I didn’t steal your memories. I saw the movie hundreds of times. They chose a really talented child actor. He got all your emotions right—the horror, the pain, the self-loathing…”

“You saw this on a TV screen?”

“Yes.”

“In your…” He chokes. “Your world?”

I jerk my chin down.

He turns away. “That’s why you jumped into the lake.”

“I thought it was a dream. I was trying to wake up.”

“It’s why you lost all feelings for Miles. And why you suddenly changed overnight. You were…” he looks me up and down, “someone else.”

“I’m sorry.”

He shakes his head, disbelief stamped over his handsome face.

“I was never meant to get your attention. I was supposed to be a supporting character. Someone who just shows up to be Catherine’s soundboard and have a little side-drama with Miles.”

He rubs the back of his head.

“But I didn’t follow the script.”

“There’s no script. This isn’t a freaking movie.”

“It is, Hawk!” I let out a sharp breath. “And when the door reopens, I’m going through it.”

“What if you didn’t?” he whispers.

I freeze.

Time stretches between us.

What if you didn’t?

My heart shatters into a million pieces. The shards are there in the palm of his hands. Scattered like ashes on the floor by his sneakers.

Stay, Shanel. You love him.

I ignore my heart. Someday down the line, Hawk’s going to wake up and realize he chose the wrong girl. He’s going to feel the tug of his destiny pulling him back to the fabulous and gorgeous Catherine.

And how can I compete with that? I was always meant to be the Token Black Friend. Nothing more.

The day Hawk realizes that, I’ll be stuck here. Forever. Left with nothing but a broken heart and regrets. Watching the man I love with the woman he was always meant to end up with.

“I’m not yours, Hawk,” I whisper. “I never was and I never will be.”

“Don’t leave, Shanel.” He captures my hand. “Choose me. And I swear I’ll always choose you.”

“You don’t know that.”

“I can deal with everything else but don’t disappear. Stay where I can see you.” He hugs me close. Envelops me in his arms. “Stay here where I can touch you.”
