His masculine scent wafts over me.

His strong chest is a refuge, tempting me to plant my life in him and stay forever.

I swallow past the lump in my throat.

I’m too scared to trust.

I’m afraid I won’t be enough.

“I’m sorry.”

He pulls back. Searches my eyes.

My lips tremble. “I told you I was leaving. I never lied to you—”

“Stop.” His jaw flexes.

“Hawk, please understand—”

“Do what you want, but if you know me then you should know better than to ask me to understand.”

I bow my head, the weight of the world on my shoulders. “Please.”

“Is this what you really want?”

He’s not asking if I want to go back.

He’s asking if I want to leave him.

My heart thunders.

I glance away.

“Look at me.” He lifts my chin and growls, “Look at me and say it.”

“I want to leave.”

His eyes widen for a second before they go cold. “Fine.”

“Hawk…”

“You got what you wanted, Shanel. Go back to your world. We’re through.”

“Hawk…”

He storms through the exits.

I hear his motorcycle rumbling.

The guttural engine is loud enough to rattle my bones.

“Hawk…” A pain like I’ve never known crashes into me. Slams my chest. Breaks my heart in two. It feels like I’m being dragged through the mud. Like I just slammed headfirst into a brick wall.

I wrap my arms around myself and cry pitifully.

This is the right choice.

Even if it feels like the wrong one.
