HAWK

My eyes burst open.

White ceiling.

Fluorescent lights.

Green curtain.

The hospital bed is soft but small. Feels like a cage.

My broad shoulders are about to bust past the metal rails. My long legs are hanging over the edge.

Pain swarms my head.

My vision blurs.

Comes back into focus.

I touch my forehead but instead of a gash, my fingers rasp against white gauze.

Memories rush back to me.

The classroom door blowing open.

The girl. Brown skin.

Frightened brown eyes.

Plump lips.

Head of wild, black curls.

I sit up.

“Whoa, careful there.” Someone shifts into focus. The school nurse. She’s wearing a stiff white shirt with the school’s logo on the pocket, a navy skirt and white sneakers. “No sudden movements. You need rest.”

I tear the IV drip from my wrist.

The needle jerks out of my skin and I hiss from the sharp sting.

The nurse shoots forward. “What are you doing?”

“Leaving.”

“Hawk, I strongly advise against—”

“You strongly advise what?” I give her a dark stare.

She trembles. Pale fingers crawl across her stomach and fold together. “You’re injured. It wouldn’t be responsible of me to let you go now.”

I grab my phone from the side table. There’s a message from Barclay.

BARC: We got summoned to the gym. Meet you in the playroom later.

I slip my phone into my back pocket. The nurse slides in front of the door and folds her arms together as if she can stop me from leaving.

“Where are you going?”
