“Sir?”

“I’m not in a good mood, Roderick. Don’t let me repeat myself.”

“No, sir… it’s…”

“What?”

“She’s gone.”

“What do you mean she’s gone?” A muscle ticks in my jaw. “Did she run out of the TV?”

Roderick gives me a frightened look.

Alarm rises within me. His blank expression is a steadfast feature in my life. We communicate via raised eyebrows and quirked lips. He’s been with me for many years and so we’ve learned to speak without opening our mouths. I’ve never seen this particular befuddled look before.

“Can the problem be solved by the time I’ve finished my shower?” I ask.

He dips his chin.

The silence is mightier than any response.

My pulse quickens with unease. I storm past him and enter the cavernous living room. A hearty fireplace crackles to my left and spits orange flames high into the air. A lone couch faces a large flat screen television and a simple bear rug covers the cold floor.

This is my sanctuary.

“Turn it on,” I bark at Roderick.

He does.

“Fast-forward. I want to see her.”

“She’s… not there, sir.”

I turn on him, a warning in my tone. “Put. Her. On.”

“She’s gone.” He swallows nervously, pressing the play button and letting the film roll out. “Kaz is no longer in the movie.”

I whirl around.

Face the TV.

He’s right.

There’s a new character now.

A new lead.

Some broad named Shanel.

I fist my hands. “What happened?”

“After the earthquake—”

I lift a hand. “The alignment did this?”

“The men are working to…”

I grab a couch and overturn it with a mighty roar. Chaos explodes in my head, beating to the tune of my crazed heart.
