“We’re close enough to not cross that line?” Fitz huffs, eyes narrowing to slits. “You really think Hawk would consider screwing your fiancé? In the playroom of all places?”

My fingers stiffen over my glass. “If I did?”

No one moves for a second.

Miles blinks. “Quit messing around, Hawk.”

“You act like you don’t want her,” I say, swirling the alcohol in my glass. “Should I take her off your hands?”

Miles’s reddening glare is a warning.

“Cut the crap, man.” Barclay falls into the sofa and drapes one leg over the arm. “You know Miles has to marry her even if he hates her. His parents set it up when they were, like, ten. Losing the golden hen to you isn’t an option.”

“I caught her trying to steal my motorcycle,” I say, suddenly exhausted. “That’s why I had her up here.”

“What?” Miles freezes.

“You can check the tapes if you don’t believe me.”

“I do.” The fight leaves Miles’s expression. “Sorry, man.”

“It’s fine.”

“She’s trying to punish me because—”

“I know.” My jaw clenches.

“I’ll talk to her.”

“Whatever.”

“I mean it.” He clamps my shoulder. “You won’t have to see her again.”

I shake Miles off and round the counter to take a seat across from Barclay.

I’ll admit, I’m curious about Shanel’s sudden personality shift, but I’m not curious enough to seek her out. Every time that woman opens her mouth, my head starts pounding. Something about her rubs me the wrong way.

Barclay sticks his feet up on the coffee table. “On another note, did you hear about Card Girl?”

“What girl?” I ask, taking another sip.

The brandy goes down warm.

It pools in my stomach

Perfect.

“The one who confessed her love to you in the hallway,” Fitz says. “I hear she’s transferring out of school.”

Miles snorts. “She didn’t even last a full semester.”

“How boring.”

Barclay folds his arms over his chest. “You crushed her.”

I shrug dismissively. Love is all about risks. She took a risk and it didn’t pay off.

Bad gamble. Lesson learned.
