“Wrong question.”

I try to slip past them. “Look, this conversation has been… great. But if you don’t mind, I have better things to do today.”

“Like what? You’re going to break into Hawk’s car next?”

“What?”

Lassandra flicks a hand at her minions. “Take her.”

For the second time today, I’m hefted up and forcibly dragged away. The hallways are empty since most of the kids have gone home already.

It’s just a dream. None of this is real.

Lassandra leads the pack of bullies into the nearest restroom.

Unease slips through my stomach.

Now would be a really good time to wake up!

The door slams shut as three of the girls file in with me while the other two stand guard.

Lassandra leans her hips against the sink. Her skirt flounces around her thighs as she slants me a dangerous look.

“Just because you’re engaged to Miles, you think you’re better than us?”

“When did I say that?”

“It really bothers me,” Lassandra huffs, “the way you rich kids think you can have anything and do anything you want.”

“You’ve got me confused, Lassandra. I’m not rich. I work a minimum-wage job at the Roly Poly Moley. I live in a crappy apartment in a crappy neighborhood. I can barely afford to go to school. That’s the kind of person I am.”

“Are you making fun of me?”

“What? No—”

She takes a threatening step. “Your family’s corporation is worth billions—”

“Well…”

“You have your own suite in this hell-hole of a school while I have to rough it with the rest of the scholarship kids.”

“Um…”

“You’re engaged to one of the richest, hottest guys here. Hell, you have Thanksgiving dinner with Miles’s super-star dad and all his celebrity friends on the regular.” She rolls her eyes. “One of the biggest artists in the world, and you’ve got him on speed dial as ‘Father-In-Law’.”

“But…”

“You know why I hate you more than the rest of them?” Lassandra smiles darkly. “It’s because you act like you’re different. You can afford to be nice and generous because you haven’t grown up with nothing. You pity us.” She shakes her head. “And it pisses me off.”

“No, you don’t understand—”

“What? What don’t I understand?”

“I’ll tell you what Hawk did. Okay? I’ll tell you.”

She hangs back.

“I just… we argued.”
