I throw it violently against me. “Wake up!”

Nothing changes.

I need something bigger than this. Something guaranteed to shock me out of this dream.

I turn and start running.

Down the hallway.

Through the exits.

Waning sunlight blazes through the sky. I spot the bridge in the distance and head there. Adrenaline pushes me forward. The wind whips my hair and tosses it into my face.

Thump. Thump.

My sneakers pound the wooden platform.

I grab the railing of the bridge and, without stopping to think it over, I hurl myself into the lake.

The water is cold.

The collision sends a tremor of pain through my entire body.

I sink like a rock.

Birds sing above me.

It’s muffled.

Like the sounds are coming from another world.

I stare at the inky blue current surrounding me.

The pressure of the water pushes me down. Presses me deeper.

My movements are languid as if I’m really drowning.

My lungs burn.

I squeeze my eyes shut, willing myself to wake up in my bed when I open them. Instead, my lungs demand oxygen and my legs kick up instinctually, propelling me to the surface.

I break free.

Gasp for breath.

Sputter.

Cough.

Look around me.

There’s no change.

It’s the same dusky sky.

Same silver moon.

A cold breeze caresses my arm and spreads goosebumps over my skin. Water drips down my face, following the course of my thick nose, to my lips and plunking back into the water.
