I scream in frustration.

What if… I can’t wake up because this isn’t a dream?

It’s impossible.

Insane.

But…

I think I’m trapped inside my favorite movie.

HAWK

I’m standing at the window, seething from Dad’s call, when I notice a figure streaking to the lake. Something about the way she moves catches my attention.

Is that Speedy?

Her hair flings behind her—wild, riotous curls. Black and white sneakers kick up grass and sand. Slim arms pump at her sides.

She looks desperate.

Like she’s running for her life.

Is she upset because Miles rejected her for the hundredth time?

Or because I kicked her out?

Swallowing down my guilt, I turn away from the window.

I need to stop thinking about this girl. She’s not my problem.

Then why do you want to turn around so badly?

I ease my head back, unable to stop myself from looking at her.

The sun is disappearing into the horizon. All around Brighton Academy, lampposts pop to life.

My eyes fall on the bridge again. I expect to find Shanel gripping the railing and staring thoughtfully at the water the way so many have through the years.

But the bridge is empty.

I spin.

Face the window fully.

Search for her.

Nothing.

Except for a disturbance in the lake.

Rings scatter over the deep end.

Froth bubbles to the surface.

Shanel.
