The loss of control frightens me.

I’m never weak.

I can’t afford to be.

But right now—

Watching this girl—

I’m powerless.

Shanel swims toward me, slicing through the lake with assured strokes. She moves quickly and steps out of the water.

Silver moonlight spills over her head.

Glimmers over her brown skin.

In her brown eyes.

Drops of water caress her plump brown lips. Her shirt is plastered to her body, outlining dangerous curves that have my pants tightening in response.

She looks like a water goddess. Damn.

She breathes out deeply. “What are you doing here?”

I shake off my fascination.

“Hawk?”

“You just can’t stay out of trouble, can you?”

She rolls her eyes.

“What were you doing jumping into the lake?”

“Mind your own business.”

“Is this about Miles?”

“Why do you care?”

“I don’t care.” I scoff.

“Then feel free to leave.” She grabs her hair and bunches the strands into her fists. Twisting her hands, she squeezes water out. “I’m sure there’s an innocent girl with a crush on you somewhere that you can humiliate.“

I grab her arm. “Do you know who you’re talking to?”

“Don’t.” She looks up, eyes narrowed, “I’ve been threatened and slapped and wrenched around all freaking day, so release my arm and walk away while I’m asking nicely.”

“No, Speedy. You don’t get it.” I jerk her closer. Close enough to hear her breath. To fall into the dark pools of her brown eyes. “I don’t follow orders. I make them.” I snatch her free wrist when she tries to hit me. “Calm the hell down.”

“No, you calm down! My life is a complete mess and now I find out I’m stuck here in this… hell-hole!”

Brighton Academy is many things, but it’s no hell-hole.

What kind of luxury is she pining for that she can’t get here?

What kind of dark thoughts filled her mind that the only solution she could come up with was jumping into the lake?
