“Forget it.” She licks her lips in agitation.

My eyes follow the trail of her tongue.

Heat burns in my chest.

I feel like I’m going nuts.

There’s a storm brewing in my soul, something bigger than me that I want to fight with all my breath.

And it’s because of her.

I drag her closer to me. “Who are you?”

Water glimmers on her thick eyelashes. “I don’t know.”

Her answer rocks my world.

I don’t know.

It’s such a raw, unvarnished response. There’s no pretense in her eyes, no attempts to look like she has it all together. She’s not trying to impress me or win sympathy points.

The pain in her expression is real.

The realest thing I’ve ever seen.

“I have no idea who I am or why I’m here.” She hangs her head. “Nothing makes sense right now. Nothing…”

My chest rises and falls frantically.

I toss her hands away.

Step back.

Her quiet sniffles are breaking my heart for some reason.

I’ve heard lots of girls cry. Hell, I’ve been the reason for their tears more times than I can count. And I’ve never cared. Never gave a damn.

But this time…

I squeeze a hand over my temple. The keening wail is back. It’s sharper now. More insistent. Like my brain is throwing a tantrum.

I grit my teeth and shake my head, slightly bending over to lessen the shrieking.

“What do I do now?” Shanel whispers, her voice hoarse.

That’s it.

I can’t stand another moment in her presence.

Nostrils flaring, I stalk away from her.

A crunching sound causes me to spin back. I find Shanel stooping on the muddy bank, her arms wrapped around her knees and her head tucked into her lap, the picture of total devastation.

My heart wrenches.

Twists.

Beats against my chest.
