Catherine remains near the door as if she’s hesitant to approach me. Uncertainty creases her pretty face.

That’s not a good sign.

It means I made a bad impression on her earlier.

Catherine folds her hands together. “You… called for me?”

“Yes.”

She worriedly pulls her bottom lip into her mouth. She’s wearing a simple grey T-shirt and shorts that cling to her willowy body. Tiny diamond earrings flash from her ears. Her hair is sleek and shiny.

Hawk was meant to fall in love with her, but even if it weren’t in the script, he’d be crazy to reject a beauty like this.

Resetting the movie will be a piece of cake.

I pat my bed. “Sit.”

“Why?”

Because I need to know where I am in the story to investigate what went wrong and how I’m going to fix it. “Because I want to be friends.”

“Friends?”

“Yes.” I pat the bed again.

Catherine perches on the edge of the mattress. “Um…” She plays with a ring on her pale finger. “I heard what Lassandra did to you in the bathroom today.”

“You did?”

“I’m sorry about that.” Catherine glances at my cheek. “Are you… okay?”

“I’m fine. A little slap never killed anyone.”

She forces a chuckle.

“You think that’s funny?” I ask in a dark voice.

“What?” She stops mid-laugh. “No, I—”

“Just kidding.” I bump her shoulder and ease into a smile. “What do you think of Brighton Academy so far?”

“It’s okay.”

“You haven’t met anyone… interesting?”

“Apart from you?” She shakes her head. “No.”

“You met B4.”

“I wouldn’t say I met them as much as witnessed them.” She leans back, getting more comfortable on the bed. “They’re all everyone talks about around here. Especially my roommate.”

“How are you and Lassandra?”

“We’re good.”

“Has she threatened you or…?”

Catherine snorts. “Why would she threaten me?”
