“What was supposed to happen?”

She startles. “Hawk.”

I tilt my head down. “What was supposed to happen?”

“Oh.” Her eyes dart left. “Nothing.”

Wrong answer.

She’s up to something.

I can sense it.

I reach out and grab her wrist.

Her eyes sharpen. “What are you doing?”

“Let’s talk.”

“What?”

I pull her down the hallway.

Shanel stumbles behind me, struggling to pry my fingers off her wrist.

Footsteps thump loudly.

I glance back and find Miles glaring at me.

He reaches out and snags Shanel’s other wrist.

I tighten my hold on her, keeping my fingers locked in place.

We’re standing on either side of her, holding her hostage in the middle.

Miles stares at me over her head. “Where are you going with my fiancée?”

“We have something to discuss.”

He yanks her in his direction. “So do we.”

I arch an eyebrow.

Miles growls, “Let her go.”

Stubbornness kicks in.

It’s a stupid impulse. He’s right. I know that. I can’t demand anything from Shanel or interfere in her life whatsoever. She’s a nameless face in a crowd of people I don’t care about.

At least she was.

Now?

Things have changed.

She’s not nameless anymore.

And I care.
