I care that Shanel despises me.
I care that she’s engaged to another man.
Pressure builds in my chest.
I’m not used to this. I grew up getting everything I wanted.
Nothing was off-limits. I never heard the word ‘no’.
Maybe I’m being selfish.
Maybe I am a jerk.
But I don’t let go.
I can’t.
Miles grits his teeth. His dark eyes drop to where my hand is still wrapped around Shanel. “Don’t play this game with me, Hawk. I’m not afraid of you.”
The tension mounts as I maintain my grip.
“Enough!” Shanel snaps her wrist free. “You!” She stabs a finger in Miles’s direction. “And you!” Her eyes flash on mine. “Follow me.” With a turn of her heels, she charges into a nearby classroom.
Miles and I exchange heated glances before trailing behind her.
Shanel is leaning against the desk when we walk in, one curvy leg crossed over the other. That furious look of hers is putting all kinds of ideas in my head.
She taps one finger against her elbow. Is it crazy that I want my hands all over her skin? Want to flick her skirt up. Jerk her panties down to her ankles and…
She’s engaged.
Damn. What the hell am I doing?
Miles hisses at me. “You should go. We need privacy.”
“You’re both staying.” She gestures us closer. “My friend’s upset so I’ll make this quick.” Her eyes flit to me. “I need to clarify something here. I’m not your property. You don’t grab my hand and drag me around. My wrists are fragile.” She lifts her hands and shakes the body part in question. “You have something to say to me, you ask.”
I smirk.
Her eyes sharpen. “Got it?”
All that fire… Could she be any sexier?
“Hawk!”
“Yes.” I dip my chin and give in. “I understand.”
“Good.” She turns to Miles. “Now to you.”
“Me?”
“I want to break the engagement.”
He straightens. “Are you crazy?”
“You continue to be rude and insulting to me.” She shakes her head. “I’m not a doormat. I’m a person who deserves to be treated with respect. And I’ve decided that my life is better without you in it. I hope you understand.”
“You can’t do that.”
