“He’s wrong, everybody!” I turn to the crowd, desperately begging them to believe me. “I’m not his. We’re not…” my hand gestures between us, “together. He’s crazy.”

“What are we then?”

I whirl toward Hawk. “Nothing. We’re nothing.”

He prowls toward me. “I want you.”

My heart flips over.

He says that like it’s totally natural.

Like he’s ordering a Big Mac. I want extra fries. And you.

I sputter in disbelief. “So? So what if you want me? You don’t always get what you want.”

He arches an eyebrow is that so?

I squeeze my eyes shut. “Take it back.”

“Why should I?”

“Hawk!”

“What?”

“Tell them it was just a joke and we’re both single.”

“If I do, are you going back to Miles?” He turns to the classroom where Miles is probably hunkered down, listening to all of this nonsense.

“What if I am?” I snap.

There’s something in Hawk’s eyes, something that warns he won’t take that choice sitting down.

How did I get myself in this mess?

“Are you?” He insists.

“Of course I’m not. I’m done with Miles. Not that it’s any of your business.”

His expression softens. “Then there shouldn’t be any problems.”

“There’s a big problem. Hello. I don’t agree with—”

“I’ll pick you up at eight tonight.”

The audacity…

“Listen up, buddy,” my voice rises in volume, “I’m not yours. I’m not Miles’s. I’m not anybody’s. I will not see you at eight. In fact, I’d prefer not to see you at all!”

He cocks his head to the side. “I thought you were worried about your friend? Do you really have time to be yelling at me?”

I glare at him.

He meets my angry stare with a smirk.

If I could just slap that sexy grin off your face…

“We’re not done.” I back away from Hawk. “And just so you know, you don’t get to decide who I date. If I have a boyfriend in this place, it won’t be you.”
