Her eyes widen. “Really?”

“Yeah.”

“Why?”

When things heat up between Catherine and Hawk, Lassandra will be pissed. I want Catherine out of harm’s way. Not only because she’s the main character, but because I kind of… actually consider her a friend.

“No reason.” I rest my head on her shoulder. “Will you?”

“Heck yeah!”

We laugh together.

As we walk outside, we pass a pair of girls who stare me down.

“Is it her?”

“Yeah. She’s Hawk’s girlfriend.”

“Should we try to talk to her?”

“Why?”

“So we can get on Hawk’s good side.”

I cringe and steer Catherine up the stairs before either of those users can approach. This is my life now.

Screw you, Hawk.

Screw you.

The elevator doors slide apart, revealing the playroom. Calm piano music fills the air, taking me back to the dull dinners Dad forced me to attend when I was a kid.

This pianist has ten times the skill of all those players put together.

Only one man would play with such passion and skill.

Fitz.

I step into the room and see his head of black hair ducking behind the grand piano. His fingers move briskly, nimble from years of practice.

Barclay sits behind the bar, knocking back a drink.

I move toward him.

Something crashes into the wall by my face.

Glass shatters.

Fragments fly everywhere.

If I hadn’t shifted away it would have struck me.

The explosion of glass booms loudly. Crystal rain pours on the marble floor.
