I hold myself steady, refusing to flinch even when a shard shoots dangerously close to my cheek.

A bad note rings from the piano. Fitz’s hands lie flat on the keys as he shoots to his feet. “The hell, Miles?”

“You could have blinded him!” Barclay yells.

“It’s fine.” I flick two fingers.

Fitz sits back down, but worry lines crease his forehead.

I step deeper into the room and face the furious man on the other side. “Did that make you feel better, Miles?”

“You have everything you could want!”

“Miles…” Barclay whispers.

“Everything!” Miles stalks over to me. “Why my fiancée, huh? Why Shanel?”

“Because it’s her.”

“What?”

I tilt my head to the side and smile as I think of the dark-skinned beauty with the eyes that spit fire. “Because she’s Shanel.”

“You think this is funny?” Miles breathes hard. “You think this is a game?”

“I’m sure your parents can find someone else for you to marry.”

“You know it’s not about that.”

I fold myself into the sofa, unbothered.

Barclay joins me on the couch. “Was that necessary, Hawk?”

I accept the drink he offers.

“You announced their broken engagement in front of the entire school.”

“It was a hallway.”

“News spreads fast.”

“I’m aware.”

“You know Shanel is his—”

I growl a warning.

Shanel is not his.

She’s mine.

I made that very clear today and will continue to do so until everyone understands.

“Hawk…”

“You won’t change my mind.”

“We’re all friends here.”
