“Make it.”
“I was going to rent out the entire place.” I grab my phone. “What do you think?”
Fitz winces. “The whole place?”
“Overkill.” Barclay laughs. “You don’t want her to think you’re desperate.”
“I’m not desperate. I’m rich.”
“Don’t go all out your first night. Especially since,” he glances around and whispers, “she publicly rejected you and all.”
I stiffen.
“Keep it casual.”
“Fine.” I bite out.
“You gonna pick her up on the bike?”
“I was thinking I’d take the Lambo.”
“She’ll be impressed,” Fitz says.
Barclay shakes his head. “Go with the BMW.”
“Why?”
“It’s classier. Right now, you’ve made the impression that you’re all about the fast life. You make impulsive decisions. You’re not stable.”
“What do you mean I’m not stable. I have—”
“Forget what you have, man. It means nothing. We all have money here. Shanel does too. You need to show her she can trust you.”
“I know how to handle women, Barclay.”
“You handle one-night stands.” He arches a black eyebrow. “Miles was right when he said you’ve never had a serious relationship. It’s different when you’re not trying to tear each other’s clothes off. You want to get to know her. You want her to like you. You. Not your money. Unless being rich is the only personality you have?”
I growl at him.
Barclay laughs. “You need a strategy. You need to put in the effort. Show her that you care about her. Not just what you want.”
Fitz tilts his head. “He’s got a point.”
“So how do I do that?”
“Get to know her. Understand what she’s saying underneath what she’s saying.” He rubs his chin. “Women have a language, man. It’s called ‘Womanese’. If you want to have a relationship with Shanel, you need to learn her language. And listen. Really listen.”
“You know all this and yet you can’t keep a relationship?”
“I’m a bastard by choice.”
I laugh and shake my head.
“But you,” Barclay massages my shoulders, “I’ve never seen you act this way before. I want you to succeed.”
“I will.” I lift the glass to my lips and drink deeply.
