No fake eyelashes.

No tight clothes.

And Hawk is, well, Hawk.

He’s a perfect specimen.

Impressive in every way.

Catherine runs around the couch and joins me in the middle of the room. “Are you sure about this? I heard Hawk is a really persistent guy. What if it doesn’t work?”

“He’s got the wrong girl.” I turn to her. “Trust me. He doesn’t really like me. He’s just confused. I’m going to send him running straight into the arms of his true love.”

Catherine bites down on her bottom lip. “Okay…”

“Shanel!”

“I’m coming!” Glancing over my shoulder, I mouth, “Watch me.”

Catherine nods.

I open the door.

Hawk stands outside, his powerful presence filling up the narrow corridor. Icy blue eyes fall on me with such cold intensity I lose my breath. Dark jeans fit perfectly over his frame. A grey T-shirt clings to the outline of his pecs.

Hot tamale…

I glance away from him and notice a crowd of girls surrounding us. They must have followed Hawk when they saw him walking to my room.

Now, they’re all staring at me.

Picking me apart.

Scrunching their noses in disgust.

“Hey.” Hawk shoves a bouquet of flowers at me.

I accept the roses. “They’re beautiful.”

“Glad you like ‘em.” He scans my outfit, his eyebrow arched. “Aren’t you ready to go, Speedy?”

“I am.”

“You sure?”

“Why? Is this too casual?” I run a hand over my old cornrows. “Do you not want to go with me? Is it too embarrassing?”

He takes a step back.

Looks me over.

A moment passes.

Every fiber of my being vibrates as I wait for him to reject me.

I feel uneasy.

It’s weird. I want him to give up. As soon as he realizes that I’m just a regular girl and nothing like the models he’s dated before, he’ll drop me like a hot potato.
