I can make it on my own. Always have. Always will.

Pressing my palm against the wall, I take measured steps.

We climb into the private elevator. On the way down, my head spins, but I try to keep it together. As long as I don’t faint, I’ll be golden.

The hallways are crowded.

Lockers are blaring open.

Textbooks are scattered all over the marble floors. It’s a mess.

I slip a hand into my pocket as I approach the hallway.

The kids see us coming and fall silent.

It hits me every time.

That sudden quiet.

The tense stillness.

I take my first step.

The energy in the hallway tightens.

Deepens.

Thickens.

It’s like we’re all teetering on the edge of a cliff. One push—one exhale and all hell will break loose.

I’m the man with his finger on the trigger, but I’m over the power trip.

All this attention.

All the girls…

Their desperation is palpable.

They’re looking my way. They’re staring straight into my face. But they don’t see me. They only see my money, my father’s connections. They only see what I can do for them.

No one cares about the guy behind the mask.

Why would they care? Is anything worth having under that mask?

Hell no.

But it still pisses me off.

Lies so easily fall off the tongue. Betrayal is a rite of passage around here. It’s a twisted game. One I always win because I make the rules.

We get deeper into the hallway.

Girls meet my eyes.

Bat their lashes.

Push up their breasts.
