I can feel their greed slamming into me.

Unwrapping me.

Trying to see where they can sneak in close.

I stare straight ahead without breaking my stride.

The kids who know what’s good for them step out of the way.

The Red Sea parting.

An unseen, automatic barrier separating us from them.

No one gets close, but the whispers float like a rising tide all around me.

“Hawk…”

“Hawk…”

“Hawk.” A brave girl steps out of the crowd.

She has skin the color of honey and chubby cheeks. Cute rather than stunning. Except for her eyes which are a deep shade of blue.

Rather than responding, I try to walk past her.

The guys follow.

“Wait,” she blurts.

I sigh.

Barclay’s lips twitch.

Miles snorts. “Here we go again.”

Scowling, I turn to her. “What?”

“H-here.” She holds out a card. “I m-made this for you.”

I bend my head forward and rub my index finger over my hairline. This is the last freaking thing I want to deal with today.

The girl’s hands are shaking.

So is her note.

“H-hawk?”

“What is this?” I snarl.

“M-my feelings for you.” She gets a little bolder and shoves the card closer to me. “Will you accept them?”

I stare into her frightened blue eyes. Reaching out, I take the card from her.

Murmurs tear through the air.

“No way.”

“Is he actually accepting it?”
