“Nobody.”

Fitz raises a brow.

“Nobody,” I say again.

Hawk eyes Fitz. “Is that true?”

“Um…”

“It’s not a big deal,”

“What isn’t?” Hawk barks.

“What we were running from.”

“Speedy—”

“My name’s Shanel.”

“Speedy,” Hawk’s jaw twitches, “anyone who messes with you is declaring war.”

“Dramatic much?”

His attention returns to Fitz. “Who was it?”

“Lassandra,” Fitz says.

I send him the stink eye.

The handsome pianist shrugs.

“She’ll be expelled tomorrow,” Hawk says.

“What?”

“I made it very clear that you belong to me. She ignored my words so now she has to pay.” He touches one of my curls. “People must understand.”

I bat his hand away. “Can he really get her expelled, Fitz?”

“He can.” Fitz leans against the locker, observing us with that look of bemusement again. “His father practically owns the school.”

I turn to Hawk. “Don’t.”

“Why?”

I squeeze my eyes shut. Sure, Lassandra is a huge pain in my behind, but I know why she’s acting this way.

In her heartbreaking confession to Catherine at the end of the movie, viewers find out that she’s an orphan. She was passed around from foster home to foster home and never really felt love.

When she came to Brighton Academy, everyone looked down on her so she learned to be tough and take care of herself.

I can relate to that. After Jenna’s accident, my parents couldn’t stand to look at me. It was either crumble from the guilt or toughen up.

I chose to do things the hard way.

“Then what should I do?” Hawk asks.

“Nothing.”
