Catherine hangs back, looking awkward.

Sensing her discomfort, I pull out a chair for her too.

Surprise crosses her face.

I dip my chin at the chair.

Hesitantly, she takes it.

Grabbing a nearby crate, I sit beside Shanel.

“Is that comfortable?” she asks, frowning at the crate.

“Not really.”

Catherine hops up. “Take my seat.”

“No.”

“I feel so horrible for barging in like this.”

“It’s fine.”

“No, really. I insist.”

“It’s okay.” I squirm on the crate, trying to find the most comfortable position.

“Please, Hawk—”

“Sit down,” I bark.

Catherine plops back into her seat.

Shanel frowns at me, her eyes sharpening in disapproval.

I sigh. “What did I do now?”

“You shouldn’t talk to people like that.”

“Like what?”

“Like they’re your slaves. She doesn’t have to listen to you.”

“Just like you rarely listen to me, Speedy?”

She scrunches her nose.

I wiggle around on the crate, but a loud crack forces me to halt all movements.

Shanel laughs. “I think you broke it.”

“What kind of rotten…” I stand and toss the crate aside.

Shanel folds her hands under her chin. Her glossy lips catch the light as she eases into a sultry smile. “What’ll you do now?”

“Stand up,” I growl.

Her eyes widen.
