I arch an eyebrow.

She scoots her chair back and steps aside. “What are you doing?”

“Solving the problem.” I take her seat. Capturing her hand, I drag her into my lap. She falls unceremoniously, her shoulder knocking the wind out of my chest.

Shanel grips the table for balance. “Hawk!”

“Speedy.”

She glowers.

I wrap my hands around her waist so she won’t think about escaping. “Much better.”

“How am I supposed to eat like this?”

“I’ll feed you.”

“I’d rather starve.”

“Suit yourself,” I murmur.

“I’m heavy.”

“You’re perfect.” I mean that with every fiber of my being.

Each time I look at her, I lose my breath. She’s magnificence dipped in the warmest shade of brown.

The wind gently lifts her curly hair. Plump lips part in frustration. With her eyes narrowed and her nostrils flaring, she looks like a delicately fierce creature capable of both satisfying and destroying me.

Shanel squirms to be free. “Go back on the crate.”

“It’s broken.”

“Then sit on the floor.”

“Not an option, Speedy.”

She glares at me.

“Come now.” I stroke my knuckles down her cheek. “It’s a beautiful day. Let’s not waste it fighting.”

“We’re always fighting.”

“Not on our first date.”

“This is not a date.”

Catherine giggles over on her side of the table.

Shanel shrieks at her. “It’s not!”

Just then the server arrives and sets our first entrée before us.

Shanel’s anger loses steam when she sees the food. She and Catherine spend a large amount of time snapping pictures of their meals before they pick up a fork. I let them have their fun, patiently waiting until they’ve taken all the pictures they want.

The boat cuts through the water.

Pink, gold, and red brush the sky.
