She smirks.

I glower at her backstabber.

She gives me a self-assured smile sorry not sorry.

Really? Who needs friends like that?

“My turn.” I set the glass back down on the table.

Hawk watches me intently.

“My question is about your father,” I say.

“Off-limits.”

I offer him a shot. “Do you get along?”

His jaw hardens and he takes the drink.

The air around us gets tense.

The wind picks up.

Harsh waves chomp at the hull of the boat.

Stars twinkle overhead.

Sharp moonlight slices through the dark sky and pierces the water.

His eyes harden on me. “Why did you jump into the lake that night?”

I take a shot. Turn to him. “When was the last time you spoke to your father?”

Hawk growls.

“Truth or shot,” I taunt.

Nostrils flaring, he downs another drink.

Catherine gets up and slowly backs away. “I’m feeling a little tipsy, so I’ll go sit over there.”

“Why do you keep pushing Catherine at me?” Hawk asks darkly, his blue eyes turning as stormy as the water.

I take the shot. Hiss. Stare at him through narrowed eyes. “Why do you blame your father for the accident?”

Sharpening, liquid-silver eyes warn that I’ve stepped over a line.

I’m skirting into dangerous territory, but I can’t stop myself.

I have a superpower.

I know the future.

His future.

His past.

His present.
