On the periphery.

I thought I didn’t deserve to be adored and protected.

I thought I deserved to disappear.

Spit gathers in my throat.

I’m treading a rocky path. The deeper my feelings for Hawk become, the more danger he’ll be in.

A hand drops on my shoulder, jerking me from my thoughts.

Expecting Hawk, I spin around.

Miles stands behind me.

“Oh, it’s you,” I say drily. Pulling my bag higher, I continue to walk down the hallway.

Miles matches my stride. “Where are you going?”

“Class.” I glance sideways at him. “I heard you took a trip off the island yesterday.”

“You keeping tabs on me?”

I snort. “You wish.”

“There was something I had to do.” He stops me with a touch on my arm. “Can we talk?”

“What are we doing now?”

“In private.”

I huff. “Fine.”

Miles takes me into a music room and closes the door.

Sunlight warms his rich brown skin. His eyes are two black jewels surrounded by thick lashes. With his plump lips and square jaw, he could be a model.

It’s too bad he’s such a douchebag.

Hawk can be a major jerk sometimes too, but there’s a difference between him and Miles. Something deeper than their looks, their bank accounts, or their propensity to grab my wrist and drag me around.

Hawk rules Brighton Academy because… well, because he’s Hawk.

Some things can’t be taught. The characteristics that make him the head of B4 are imbedded deep within his body.

Imprinted in his DNA.

Trapped in his soul.

He just is.

Miles seems like he’s trying too hard to prove something.

In a way, we’re a lot alike. Both scrambling to find a place where we belong. Where we can be the leads of our own movie.

He closes the door and turns to face me. “I get that I haven’t been treating you the best and that made you feel some type of way, but acting out like this is unacceptable.”

‘Acting out’? Is he serious?
