I roll my eyes. “Miles, just stop.”

“We’ve been engaged since we were kids and I always resented you for that. Maybe I got a little carried away with how I treated you.”

“You think?” I snap.

In the movie, he was going around cheating on Kaz and humiliating her every chance he could get. And then, in the end, the stupid writers had him crawling back with an apology quite like this one.

Guess what?

Kaz took him back.

I screamed at the TV in total frustration the first time I saw their make-up kiss on screen.

“Lately, you’ve been acting different and I…” He shakes his head, staring pitifully at the ground. “I don’t know what to do about it.” He moves a step closer. “Tell me what to do about it.”

“You can start by backing the hell up.”

“Shanel, we belong together.”

I snort.

“I miss the old us.” He takes my hand. “Can’t you go back to who you used to be?”

I snatch my arm away. “What exactly are you asking for, Miles?”

“I hate it when we argue.”

“No, you hate it when I defend myself from your bullying.”

“What?”

“I am not someone you get to belittle because you feel you have power over me. You tried your best to tear me down until she—I mean I felt like I was nothing.”

“I said I was sorry.”

“So? You think I’ll just come running to you because you apologised? You hurt me with your actions. If you really changed, you’d earn my trust back with actions too.”

“What the hell am I supposed to do?”

“I don’t know. It’s not something I can tell you. You have to figure it out yourself. That’s how you prove you’ve learned your lesson.”

“Just stop being hard-headed and take me back.” He growls. “I’m done begging.”

“I can choose whether I accept your apology or not and I choose not.”

Hardness creeps into his eyes. “Are you saying you won’t honor the engagement?”

“No.”

“It’s been years, Shanel. You can’t just—”

“I’m not a contract, Miles. I’m a person.”

His eyes narrow with disgust. “What happened to the girl who would do anything for me?”

“She grew up,” I say calmly.

His fingers dig into my shoulder. “You can’t do this.”
