“Let me go.”

“You’re making a big mistake.”

“I said get off me.”

His brows lower into two angry slashes. “The marriage is back on, Shanel. I don’t want to hear a word about it.”

“Stop. You’re hurting me!” I raise my hand to slap him, but he captures my wrist.

“You think I’ll let an ugly pig like you hit me twice?” He sneers. “I already talked to your father. All the parents are in agreement.”

“What the hell are you talking about?”

“I don’t care what’s going on between you and Hawk. You’re my fiancé. As soon as we graduate…” He leans in, his mouth closing the distance between our lips, “you’re going to be my w—”

I hike my knee up and slam it into his groin.

A pained sound teeters from his lips.

As his hold slackens, I make a run for it. Thrusting the door aside, I skate into the hallway.

Frantic breaths shudder through me.

I glance back to see if Miles is in pursuit, but there’s nothing but a crowded hallway. People give me strange looks so I slow down and grab my knees to catch my breath.

Is everyone in this movie crazy?

With a shake of my head, I straighten.

Just then, my phone rings.

I pull it out of my pocket and check the screen.

Dad.

It’s been so long since he’s called me that tears immediately spring to my eyes.

Unlike Mom—who was very vocal about her hatred for me after Jenna’s death, especially when she found out I’d rescued someone else instead, Dad just kept looking at me with such disappointment that it broke my heart.

I almost wish he’d scream at me the way mom did.

Instead, he ignored me.

It was almost like he lost two daughters that day—one by accident and one by choice.

Swallowing down my unease, I answer the call.

“Shanel,” a voice that is not Dad’s says, “how are you, baby?”

I blink. Pull the phone away. Stare at it.

Why is some random guy calling me ‘baby’?

And then it hits me.

I’m in this movie as Kaz. Her parents are different than mine.

I clear my throat and say awkwardly, “Hey, Dad.”
