“Why not?” I ask.

“You’ll have to guarantee her safety and then make it look like she crossed over into your territory and you took her.”

This gets better and better. “Why is that?”

Lenox wrinkles his nose. “Because she’s my princess’s lady, and Gloriana would never give her up.”

“My son likes the girl, Lenox. This is a bad idea.”

“You got a better one?”

I smile so wide, I think my face might split in half. Now, this female is someone Lenox isn’t willing to give up, but he’s cornered. If he gives her up, he’ll hurt his mate. I could change my mind and not take the female after all. In fact, I’m within my rights to attack the small family gathering right now.

“Is she here tonight?” I want to know if the girl is in their immediate circle. She has to matter to his mate enough to put her by the firepit tonight.

“Aye.”

Inner circle, then. “A name?”

“Marybell.”

“Sweet name.” I give my crotch a squeeze.

The pair of McMars growl.

I laugh, satisfied. “I’ll tell you what…”

MARYBELL

Milady married her lycan mate and shared a wedding with another female in the clan. It was so perfectly romantic.

Checking to be sure milady is wolfing down her breakfast on the terrace and not watching me, I press her fine wedding gown against my white apron, which covers my gray work dress. The girl in the mirror staring back at me is a fancy stranger, for I would never marry.

Born a Hanna, I’m part of the family that has served the Kilseleian crown since the beginning of the late king’s time. It’s a great honor and the purpose of my life to spend it with milady, making sure all her affairs are in order.

And she has many affairs now that she’s married, pregnant, and working as a representative of the Kilseleian peoples living on the lycan lands.

I place the dress inside the linen bag, then swipe her pretty wedding shoes from the floor and walk onto the terrace. A fresh morning wind blows the white bonnet off my head, introducing a chill into my bones and heralding the coming fall.

Milady shivers. “Brr. I wonder what the winters are going to be like out here?”

“We won’t spend themout here. We’ll sit by the fireplace and hibernate.”

She chuckles and tucks her dark hair behind her ears. Her bangs are growing long. I’ll remind her to let me cut them soon.

I show her the shoes. “Will you wear these again, or should I store them with the dress?”

Milady’s eyes twinkle. “With the dress. This way, when you marry, you can wear them with your favorite dress.” She taps the wedding gown I’m holding.

I snort in a most unladylike fashion. “My favorite garment of yours this dress may be, but I will never marry. Walking with you through life is my choice.” When the savages defeated her father and took control of the palace, I could’ve fled with the other staff. I stayed with milady.

She pokes a fresh berry with a fork and pops it into her mouth. After a bout of pregnancy sickness, milady is finally eating without throwing up. Well, most of the spans. I think the wedding made her happy and she’s looking forward to the fae court’s summer wedding, which is coming up shortly. Since half the world is invited to the event, that’s pretty much all anyone is talking about.

“We’re not in Kilseleia anymore, and even if we were, your parents married and so did your grandparents. You can marry.”

I dislike these conversations with milady. It makes me feel like she’s trying to get rid of me. Or worse, that I’m no use to her anymore. “You make a better husband than any male.”
