“Thank you, Alpha.” I want to ask about the weird thing happening with his lycans outside, but since he’s not volunteering information, I’ll ask Mackenzie whenever she comes around.

Lenox kisses my princess on her cheek and follows me inside. Normally, we hash out things outside their chambers, so I turn to put away her dress, but before I can, Lenox touches my elbow and walks me outside immediately. We move toward the middle of the hall, where Rohan awaits holding a red backpack.

When Lenox stops and the males face me, their eyes averted as if they’re uncomfortable, I clutch the dress.

An uncomfortable alpha male makes me nervous. These types of males don’t do discomfort. They’re bold and brazen, and they never falter.

“Marybell,” Lenox’s voice falters.

“Oh no.” I cover my mouth, tears springing forth. “The foal died.” Oh, poor thing. Clendina, milady’s mare, labored all night. It’s why I’m tired this morning. I spent the night with her in the hay, but then milady woke up, and I tended to my duties.

“What? No. The mare is fine. The foal will live.”

I smile. “She delivered, then?”

Rohan nods. “Aye. A healthy colt.”

“Great news. Tell me the bad news now.” I nod because I’m ready. Good news delivered first gives me the strength to get through whatever is coming. And I know it’s bad. Someone died. I’m certain of it. Since I have no family left, and Lenox and milady are my only family, I’m at a loss as to who it might be.

Lenox squares his jaw, and his dark eyes level me with a stare that makes me want to drop to my knees and beg for mercy from whatever is coming.

“Do you remember the incident we’re not supposed to talk about?”

Hmm. “The one where you chained Rohan to your bed, or the one where he chained you?”

Lenox shakes his head. “Neither of those.”

“The butthole incident?”

Rohan tilts his head. “You can tell me about that one later.”

“She will not,” Lenox says, and his eyes do the same thing they did outside. They droop and appear sad.

“I’m out of guesses.”

“The Duane incident,” Lenox says.

I look around the hallway, making sure nobody hears us. Duane fought the Ott clan members and eliminated some to help his dad marry his mom, but we’re not supposed to tell Freya, his mom. Gloriana doesn’t know either because that’s disturbing clan business. Lenox considers me a part of the clan, someone who handles upsetting news along with him. “What about it?”

“You remember how I said it will cost us? That the Alpha of the Ott clan will come asking for the debt to be paid?”

Swallowing, I nod. The white-furred lycans lining the forest outside are Otts. I heard they’re mostly white furred and live deep in the snow-covered territories.

“The Alpha is here.”

“What does he want?”

“You.”

MARYBELL

The silence stretches too long, and when both Rohan and Lenox stare at me, I realize that theyouthat came out of Lenox’s mouth really meant me and not someone else. Obviously, he meant me since I’m the only me talking to Lenox in the hallway at the moment, but disbelief over what he said won’t let me comprehend.

I lean in even more and give Lenox my profile, tapping my ear. “Say that again? Because my brain might be playing tricks on me.”

“The Ott Alpha wants you.”
