“I honestly haven’t.” His brows knit together.

“I met your girlfriend.”

“What?” Colt’s frown deepens.

“Your girlfriend. I met her. We had a nice, long chat about how you’ve been cheating on her with me.”

“Sass,” Colt stops, and I wait for him to either confess or deny everything. Instead, he shocks me by bursting out laughing.

“I don’t know who you talked to, but I don’t have a girlfriend.”

“Stop lying. Your scam is up.”

“Sassy, there’s been some kind of mistake.” Amusement still dances on his face, which makes me madder. He’s sticking to his story, and I wonder how often he so easily lies to people.

“Just give it up, Colt,” I growl. “She’s not the only one telling me you two are together. Chase told me too.”

“Chase? The rich kid?” Confusion clouds Colt’s face again. I nod. “Why would he say I have a girlfriend? I barely know the guy.”

“Because he knows her.” I answer stonily. “And after he told me, I went to your house, and I ran into her there.”

“I don’t understand what’s happening. Who is this girlfriend I supposedly have? What’s her name?”

“Dani.” I spit. “The one who threw a beer all over me.”

“Dani?” Colt’s eyebrows lower.

“Yep. The one you convinced me is crazy, but it turns out she was just pissed that you were cheating on her.”

It looks like there are cogs turning over in Colt’s brain, trying to piece things together, but with no luck. “Sheiscrazy. She told you she’s my girlfriend?”

“Enough with the innocent act, okay?” I’m getting furious now, my voice rising. “I ran into her leaving your house. You kicked her out as soon as I messaged about coming over. We’ve caught you red-handed, so just give it up.”

“Wait. You saw her leaving my house?” Colt’s face goes pale.

“Yes,” I answer, but my voice falters a bit. He doesn’t look okay.

“What the hell?” Colt runs a hand down his face and stares out of the front window. “She wasn’t at my house last night.” He turns back to me. “Sassy, I swear to you, we aren’t together. I hardly even know the girl.”

If he’s acting, he’s damn good at it. I try to make sense of what he’s saying.

“She told me you’ve been together for a year. That you were only on a break when she tipped the beer over me.”

Colt laughs, but it’s strained. “I slept with her once, and that’s all. Now she keeps appearing at every party I’m at. Was she really at my house last night? That’s creepy as fuck. Did you see her coming out?”

I think hard. “No, I guess not. She was walking down the steps from your porch. I didn’t see her come out of the front door.”

“What the hell was she doing there?” Colt looks so alarmed that I think perhaps he isn’t lying to me after all.

“Are you honestly telling me the truth, Colt?”

He gives me an earnest look. Then he pulls his phone out of his pocket. He scrolls through it until he finds what he’s looking for, then holds it out to me.

“Here,” he says. I can see on the screen that he wants to show me some text messages.

“Yuck, I’m not reading your messages.” I say, pushing the phone back to him. Who goes through other people’s phones? Either trust them or don’t.

“Please Sassy, read what she says and my replies. You can’t read that and then say you still believe she’s my girlfriend.”
