I hesitate, looking at him. I don’t tell him I’m already starting to believe what he’s telling me. But Dani was damn convincing last night, so perhaps it’s worth seeing to get rid of any niggling doubts.

“Fine,” I take the phone from him. I scroll up to the beginning. He starts by telling her he’s sorry, but he’s not looking for a relationship right now. I skim through message after message where she’s asking how he is, what he’s up to, if he’d like to catch up and all of Colt’s answers are one word. His messages progressively change tone, and I can see he’s losing his patience with her. Colt isn’t lying.

“That crazy bitch,” I whisper, thinking about the act she put on last night. “She tackled me, you know, warned me to stay away from you.”

“She hurt you?” Colt is alarmed. “That’s it. We’re going to the police.”

“No, we aren’t.” I roll my eyes at him. “You think I can’t take that waif on? She’s lucky I wasn’t fighting back because I thought I was the one in the wrong. Fuck me, that girl can act, that’s for sure.”

“I hate she went after you. I don’t care what she says to me, but I don’t want her anywhere near you.” Colt says through a clenched jaw. And even though I hate people trying to rescue me, the defensive tone in his voice makes me smile a bit.

“Why was she at your house, then?” I ask. “Was she, like, stalking you or something? Looking through your windows and I interrupted her?”

“I don’t know,” Colt shakes his head. “She always turns up at places, everywhere I go. Maybe she’s been following me and that’s how she always knows where I am?”

Something niggles at the back of my mind. “Even before I saw her last night, Chase told me you have a girlfriend. That’s why I was coming over to ask you about it.”

“I can’t explain that. I’ve only met the guy once or twice at different parties. How do you know him?”

“Um, we’ve been friends for a while.” I clear my throat and Colt raises his eyebrows at me.

“Friends?” He asks.

“Something like that.”

He nods but doesn’t ask more. “Maybe he wants me out of the picture so he can have you to himself?”

“I don’t think so,” I say thoughtfully. Chase might miss sleeping together, but I don’t think he’d stoop to petty games. “Even if that’s the case, it’s too much of a coincidence that right after he told me you have a girlfriend, I run into Dani. Who then tells me the same story.”

“Yes, it does seem weird. But I swear Sassy as soon as my friends are home from class today, you can come over and ask them yourself. It’s been years since I’ve had a girlfriend. They’d probably find the question hilarious.”

“I’m not questioning your friends. And anyway, if they were good friends, they’d lie for you.” I smirk.

“They aren’t very good at lying. I’ve played poker with them. Seriously though, I haven’t even hooked up with a chick since I met you. Not a single kiss, nothing.” He lays his head against the headrest and puts a hand over mine. A smile plays at the corner of my mouth. He hasn’t kissed a girl since meeting me?

“It’s fine,” I say. “I don’t need to start a full interrogation of people. Clearly, Dani has a few issues. But I’ll still be asking Chase what he was talking about.”

“Please do. I’m dying to know who my girlfriend is that he knows.”

A quiet laugh escapes me. I lean back on the headrest too, letting his fingers brush against my hand. I’m annoyed at myself for letting Dani get to me. My gut feeling when Chase mentioned a girlfriend had been that there was a misunderstanding, and I wish I’d listened to it better. It’s unlike me to let people get into my head. Then again, it’s unlike me to let a boy get under my skin, too.

Colt lifts his hand off mine and traces a finger down my cheek.

“How can I prove to you that you’ve been the only person on my mind, night and day, for weeks?”

The look in his eyes tells me he’s already decided exactly how he wants to prove it. I catch the finger that’s on my cheek and keep eye contact with him. Slowly, I move his finger to my lips and then take it in my mouth. I watch his eyes grow wide as I suck it, then gradually pull it back out.

“Fuck Sassy,” he groans. “Why is everything you do so damn hot?”

He pulls me towards him and kisses me, our tongues finding each other, falling into our usual fast rhythm. There’s an urgency behind this kiss. As though the fight has ignited something inside of us, making us want to brand each other with our bodies to prove that we’re okay again.

“Slide your seat back,” I say, moving towards him.

“Let me take you home.”

“No,” I meet his eye. “I need you right now.”

“I don’t have any condoms here.”
