“It was all my idea, though. You said we shouldn’t leave the counter unattended, and I didn’t listen.”

“I was hardly fighting you over it Sassy, it takes two, remember? This is both our fault, equally.”

We reach the park down the road and sit on a table, our feet on the seats. I prop my elbows on my knees and put my head in my hands. I’m still trying to process what just happened. Did we really just get fired?

“I didn’t know he had cameras in there.” Sassy says thoughtfully from beside me.

“You know what? Neither did I.” I lift my head back up. “Are they hidden or something? Doesn’t he have to, like, tell us if we’re being filmed?”

“Dunno,” Sassy shrugs. Then she snickers. “We really put on a show for him, didn’t we?”

I can’t help but snort too, even while I cringe.

“Why was he looking at the security footage, anyway? Does he watch us each shift or something? How creepy.” Sassy shudders.

“Don’t know. He’s always been a bit strange. Do you reckon he watched it all the way through?” Images of Sassy bent over the table, me coming all over her ass, play like a movie in my head. I’m glad I’m fired. I’ll never be able to look him in the eye again.

“Ew. He probably did. And it’s probably the most action he’s had in a lifetime.”

“God, what if he’s kept it?” I feel ill.

“I wonder what angle the camera is on?” Sassy is thoughtful, and I huff out a laugh. She’s got messed up priorities.

“He’s probably got heaps of cameras in there and has all the angles.”

“He might sell the footage as a movie.” She nudges me with her elbow. “We might end up famous.”

“Reckon Dean Pritchard might have something to say if that gets leaked?” The horror on Sassy’s face makes me laugh, then she joins in too. We completely lose it until we double over, unable to stop.

“I can’t believe he just got more of a show from me than people at my damn stripping job ever got,” Sassy wheezes, wiping tears of mirth from her eyes.

“Well, now we’re both out of a job, making movies can be our next venture.” I say and the laughter dries up. We grow sombre as it hits us. We are very much unemployed now.

“Damn,” I mutter. “That was actually a pretty good job. Perfect hours and so easy.”

“Yeah,” Sassy sighs. “We fucked up.”

We fall into silence as the sun sets behind the buildings in the distance and the light around us fades. I’ll need to find a job soon. And I need to keep this a secret from my sister, or she’ll insist on helping me. I’ve never accepted her money, and that won’t change now. My small stash of savings will keep me afloat for a while, so I try to push the worry from my mind.

“Let’s go out tonight,” Sassy says. I realise she’s been watching me, and I wonder if she’s worried about my mood turning so serious. “Forget about him. Celebrate not having a job to get up for tomorrow. Those early morning shifts were killer, anyway.”

“You only did one early shift!” I laugh. “Then said you don’t ‘do’ mornings and never did another one.”

“Yeah,” she rolls her eyes playfully. “That’s because they were killer. Come on, let’s go out. Have some fun.”

I run a hand through my hair, thinking of reasons not to. My failing classes, being behind on my assignments, my friends who seem to want to spend more time with me. But honestly? Blowing off steam from the sting of being fired sounds like the best option right now.

“Sure,” I say, standing up. “Why not?”

Chapter26

Sassy

“What’s wrong?” Taylor asks from where she’s sitting on her bed. I’m in my room getting ready to go out, but haven’t been able to shake the churning in my stomach since this afternoon.

“What?” I grumble, wondering what gave it away that I’m in a foul mood.

“You keep sighing. You’re clearly upset or pissed off about something.”
