“Yeah, maybe.” I say. “He’s probably waiting downstairs for me. We’re going out tonight.”

“Everything will be fine.” Taylor jumps up from her bed and gives me a quick hug. “You guys are great together. Stop overthinking things.”

“You’re probably right.” I swing my tote over my shoulder and force a smile. “Anyway, don’t wait up!”

I leave the room quickly, fleeing from the feelings that conversation dredged up. When I get downstairs, as soon as I see Colt leaning against the outdoor bench, waiting for me, my resolve to stop seeing him falters.

He’s wearing jeans and a white shirt, his dimple deepening when he sees me. He’s so hot it makes my knees weak. But it’s not about his looks. It’s our chemistry that pulls me towards him. Like he’s a drug that I’m addicted to, stopping me from walking away and closing the door on this chapter. I’m not sure if it’s healthy for either of us, and I’m not sure if I care. I race up to him and pull him into a long kiss.

“Wow,” he says, pulling away, but with his arms still wrapped around my waist. “What did I do to deserve that?”

“I’m still feeling bad.” I look down at the ground. “For getting you fired. And, you know, probably getting you kicked out of uni.”

Colt laughs and pulls me into a bear hug. “I’m not getting kicked out of school. And I’ve already told you, the newsagency thing is on both of us, so stop blaming yourself.”

I look up at him, and can’t help but wonder, how did someone so undeserving like me end up with a good guy like him?

“Are you sure?” I ask.

Colt tucks a strand of hair behind my ear and kisses my nose. “Of course I’m sure. Now let’s go out.”

Chapter27

Sassy

Colt and I have been busy drinking and dancing the night away. We’ve hung out with some friends but spent most of our night blowing off steam on the dance floor. Colt has gone for a toilet break now while I hit the bar. I’ve just picked up our drinks when there’s a voice behind me.

“So, you’re still with him?” I turn around and find Chase standing there, clearly drunk.

“Hi Chase, how are you?” I ask with exaggerated politeness.

“I didn’t peg you as a home-wrecker Sassy. What’re you still doing with him?”

“Goddamn it, Chase,” I sigh, my faux polite tone already dropping. “Get your facts straight before you accuse me of bullshit. Or better yet, just stay out of my business.”

“I have my facts straight. It’s you who’s got the wrong info. I know his girlfriend, Sassy.”

“Who, Dani? That girl is a crazed stalker. She slept with Colt once, got all obsessed with him, and now she’s trying her best to ruin our lives.”

Chase studies my face. We know each other well enough to pick up when the other is lying. I also thought we knew each other well enough to not believe rumours, but here we are. His face softens. He must see by my face that I’m being straight with him.

“Well, I guess that explains a few things, anyway.” He lifts his beer to his mouth, swaying slightly on his feet.

“Like what?” I look around for Colt. I’ve lost interest in this conversation, and I have our drinks ready.

“I’ve heard he’s going off the rails. Flunking out and shit. If he’s with you, that makes sense.”

My full attention snaps back to Chase. Frowning, I put my drinks back on the bar.

“What did you just say?”

“Don’t get upset. I’m just calling it what it is. You meet people and this happens.”

“What the hell, Chase? Are you trying to say I led you astray as well? Funny, because I think you did that all on your own.”

“That’s different,” Chase shrugs.

“How?”
