“Hey.” I smiled at her beautiful face on the screen. But then I immediately frowned. “You look tired,mi cielo. Are you sleeping okay?”

She shook her head, and my heart plummeted.

“Are you worried about your mom?” I asked, knowing she had a scan coming up. Kendall hadn’t talked about it much, but I knew it weighed on her. As did the situation with Jude.

“Yeah,” she said, but I sensed there was more to it. Still, I didn’t push. I knew Kendall would tell me when she was ready.

“I wish you were here.” I sighed, knowing everything was better with Kendall. “I miss you.”

“I miss you too.” She smiled, but it was tinged with sadness. “But we both know I couldn’t go with you.”

I nodded, but I hated it all the same. We’d agreed that until we sorted things out with Jude, we’d continue to keep our relationship a secret. He deserved some time to come to terms with the news before we went public with it.

“Are you and Emerson having fun?” I asked.

“Yeah.” She yawned. She told me about their day. But before too long, she said, “It’s getting late. I think I’m going to head to bed.”

Late?I frowned at the screen, noting that it was one in the morning for me, which meant it was barely ten o’clock for her.

Something was wrong. She never ended the call this quickly.

“Mi cielo,” I said in a gentle tone. “Talk to me.”

“I…” She glanced away briefly, and then I watched as a tear streaked down her cheek. She wiped it away quickly. “I’m late.”

It took a second for her words to process, but when they did, I stilled. “Late. As in, your period’s late?”

I concentrated on the screen, feeling as if I were staring into a black tunnel. A black tunnel that had started spinning.

“Yeah,” she croaked.

My muscles tightened, and I rubbed my brow in an effort to stay calm. “Have you taken a test?”

She shook her head, tears in her eyes. “No,” she whispered. “I’m too scared.”

I stood and started throwing things into my bag, carrying my phone with me as I went. “I’ll be there in a few hours.”

“No. Knox.” She shook her head. “The event. You can’t come home early.”

“Of course, I’m coming home early,” I said. “I’ll be there before morning.”

“Knox—”

I cut off her protest. “I’ll see you tomorrow.”

“See you tomorrow.” She smiled, but it was weak.

“It’s going to be okay,mi cielo,” I said, trying to reassure her as much as myself. “I love you.”

“I love you,” she whispered then disconnected the call.

I frowned at the blank screen, my mind spinning. Was Kendall pregnant? Because if she was, it would change everything.

CHAPTERTWENTY-FOUR

Iopened the door to the backyard and walked outside, needing some fresh air. Emmy had gone to get us some ice cream and pregnancy tests. I hadn’t intended to tell Knox that my period was late, but I also knew I couldn’t face this without him.

I wound through the backyard, trying not to let myself go down the black hole of what-ifs. I didn’t want to add to Knox’s stress, but I needed him. I needed to know it would be okay.
