“Do you want to take the test?”

“No,” I answered immediately.

“Kendall, you might feel better if you know.”

I shook my head. “I want to wait for Knox. I want to do it with him.”

“Okay,” she said. “Are you going to tell him about what happened with Jude?”

“I-I—” I blew out a breath. “I don’t know. I have to deal with one thing at a time. And I don’t want to make things even worse, you know?”

“I’m not sure it can get much worse at this point.”

“You’re wrong.” I laughed, but it was humorless. “I might be pregnant with my ex’s half brother.”

The mattress dipped behind me,and I froze.“Mi cielo,”Knox exhaled my name like a prayer, pulling me into his arms.

I softened, grateful he was home. Surprised I’d actually fallen asleep.

“Knox,” I said, turning to face him in the darkness. “I missed you.”

“I missed you too.” He dotted my skin with kisses, and my body relaxed. He was home.“How are you feeling?”

“Tired,” I said. I wassovery tired.

“Then rest,” he said in a soothing tone while rubbing my back. “I’m here.”

When I woke again, I had to squint against the bright morning sun. I turned to grab my phone from the nightstand, smiling at the sight of a huge bouquet of fresh peonies. I wondered when Knox had even had the time to pick them up.

I pulled on my robe and padded downstairs to the kitchen. Knox was sitting on one of the barstools, working on his laptop. He looked delicious, and I wrapped my arms around him, trying to ignore the box of pregnancy tests Emmy had left for me.

“Hey,” he said, placing his hands over mine. “You’re up.”

I nodded against his back, letting his warmth seep into me. “Where’s Emmy?”

“She left earlier. But she said to call if you need anything.”

“Thank you for the flowers,” I said, resting my cheek against him.

He turned to face me. “My pleasure.” He grasped my chin, bringing my lips to his mouth for a kiss. It was languid and sensual, making me feel centered once more.

“Mm.” I hummed, getting lost in his kiss.

“How about some breakfast?” he asked. “Javier left some pancakes in the fridge. Or I’m happy to whip up anything your heart desires.”

When my eyes landed on the pregnancy tests, my good mood vanished. “Thanks, but I’m not hungry.”

“Did you take the test yet?” He tucked my hair behind my ear.

“No.” I shook my head. “I couldn’t.”

“Look—” He placed his hands on my hips. “I want you to know that no matter what happens, we’re in this together.”

“Yeah, but…” I lowered my voice, my throat strangled with emotion. “What if I’m pregnant?” We both knew he didn’t want any more kids.

“We’ll cross that bridgeifwe get there,mi cielo. For now, we just need to know. Right?”
