I moaned, even as I tried to stay focused on the conversation. “I still don’t understand…”

Knox pressed a finger to my lips. “Mi cielo, it’s taken care of.”

I shook my head. It didn’t make sense. “He was so angry. And now he’s not? Just like that?” I snapped my fingers.

Knox let out a heavy sigh. “I didn’t want to tell you this, but he threatened to oust me from the Leatherbacks.”

“What?” I jerked my head back. “How? Why?” I paused, and then the answer dawned on me as I connected the dots between Jude’s questions that night by the pool. My eyes went wide. “Oh my god. The nonfraternization clause.”

Knox nodded. “But it’s not going to happen. And I would’ve never let him go through with his threat.”

“We broke the rules. How would you have stopped him?”

“I wouldn’t have,” he said simply.

I narrowed my eyes at him. “What do you mean, youwouldn’thave stopped him?”

He smoothed my hair over my shoulder. “I would’ve given up the team willingly, if that’s what it took for us to be together.”

“I can’t…” I shook my head, my chest tightening. “You’ve already given up so much to be with me. Too much,” I added in a quieter voice.

“Don’t you get it?” Knox cupped my cheek, bringing my gaze to his. “None of it matters without you.”

He slanted his mouth over mine, his kiss deep and passionate. It felt like coming home, and I moaned, needing that connection. Needing him.

He rolled so his body was on top, covering mine. I roamed his back with my hands, memorizing every inch of him. Committing it to memory.

How could I ever think of asking Knox for more? Of asking him for a child?

I couldn’t. Not after everything he’d been willing to sacrifice to be with me. His relationship with his son. The team…No.

Over and over again, Knox had put me first. He’d prioritized my needs.

For now, this was enough. Or at least, I wanted it to be.

CHAPTERTWENTY-SEVEN

Kendall burrowed deeper into my side just as she had my heart. I smoothed my hand over her skin from the top of her underwear, up to her ribs, then back down again. It had been a few weeks since my talk with Jude, and life had settled into an easy routine once more.

Kendall worked from home most days. Jude was back at the office, but he’d apologized to Kendall. And I fell more in love with her every day.

I made the same circuit again, rubbing slowly. But this time, she arched her back slightly, moaning when I teased the bottoms of her breasts, practically thrusting them into my hand.

“Morning.” She hummed, sliding her hand over my sweatpants and stroking me through the material.

I groaned. “You’re going to make me late.”

“Is that a problem?” she teased, shifting her hips to give me a tantalizing view of her body. “I thought you were the boss.”

“Kendall,” I ground out, rolling us so I was on top. I grabbed her wrists and held them above her head.

“Knox,” she said, arching her hips so our pelvises were crushed together. We started rocking in unison. “I need you. Please.”

I pressed my lips to hers. “You know I can never say no to you.”

Her expression darkened, but then it passed. But when we resumed kissing, it felt as if her mind was somewhere else, as it often was lately. I pushed up on my elbows and brushed her hair away from her face.

“Mi cielo?”I kissed her forehead. Her cheek. Her chin. “Is something wrong?”
